Women & Men in Blue & White’s Haifa Center for Lone Soldiers Program Description One of our main projects for 2009 is to open a center for Lone Soldiers in Haifa and throughout the North. At the center Lone Soldiers can come for help on anything from getting information on the army, to finding accommodations, to finding a host family for Shabbat and holidays, to washing their clothes or seeing a friendly face. Women & Men in Blue & White wants to help these young men and women resettle into a new country as they integrate into Israeli civilian society before, during and after the army as they fulfill their dream of returning to the Jewish homeland of Israel. These soldiers need assistance throughout their absorption process, starting from the months before their enlistment into the IDF into the years following. We provide for all of their needs and we are their families away from home. Goals and Objectives Our easily accessible location will make it easier for young soldiers to come in for information on the army and its units while they settle into life in Israel. We will have everything there from administrative space and meeting rooms, to a laundry room with washers and dryers, to a comfortable sitting area with free Internet access, to a space for the young soldiers to pick up food for Shabbat and the holidays. From this office in Haifa we will be open to more soldiers as they arrive in Israel and settle into the North, help them find and furnish an apartment to come home to on their Shabbat and holiday leave, set them up with host families and support them even after their service. Our center will be open and staffed for soldiers to drop-in during convenient hours for them that has a supportive environment where Lone Soldiers can get to know one another and receive practical assistance. Most of the volunteers are former Lone Soldiers themselves who are now studying in the universities in Haifa. The staff will be equipped with the information and connections the soldiers need regarding the army, housing, and Israel absorption. open their homes to soldiers who need a home cooked meal for Shabbat or any holiday. The center will also give us a location to hold seminars and one-on-one counseling for the soldiers with experts on resume writing, job searches in Israel, higher education and emotional adjustment. |
